Cast Shadow Table

ACADEMIC / INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

Project Type: Metals for Furniture Design

Date: Winter 2019

Location: Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)

Role: Concept, Research, Analyst, Visualization, Prototype, Presentation, Ideation, Hand Modelling, 3D Modelling

Skills: Product Design, Furniture Design, Metalworking

The goal of this project is to learn the techniques of metal fabrication as they apply to furniture design. Design issues are resolved through a series of drawings and models and welding skills. Complete a piece of furniture in full size.

When I was playing with the geometric shapes in Illustrator, a thought pop out in my mind. How to make a 2D image to a 3D object? Add a shadow! What is Shadow? Shadow occupies all of the three-dimensional volumes behind an object with light in front of it, and the cross-section of a shadow is a two-dimensional silhouette. So, the shadow only appears on a 3D object, and the shadow itself is 2D. What if it's the other way around? If I add a shadow to a 2D graphic, can I turn it into a 3D object? What if I made the shadow itself 3D?
